Who has how much? Every year the business magazine “Bilanz” answers this question with its list of the 300 richest in Switzerland. Not much has changed at the top, unlike wealth. That has grown again. However, different than in previous years.

Every year the business magazine “Bilanz” presents the 300 richest in Switzerland. And every year it becomes clear that the rich are getting richer.

At the top is the family of Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad. The senior has long since moved back to his Swedish homeland. The three sons still reside in Switzerland.

Jorge Lemann climbed to second place. The head of the world's largest beer group, AB InBev, owes the good placement to a whopping plus of three billion Swiss francs.

The Hoffmann and Oeri family are “only” in third place. The Roche owner clan had to vacate the site because of a slight weakness in pharmaceutical stocks.

Every 14th billionaire lives in Switzerland

Together, the 300 richest in Switzerland have assets of 595 billion Swiss francs. 132 of the 300 people on the list can call themselves billionaires. Seen worldwide, every 14th billionaire lives in Switzerland.

The net worth per capita is $ 1983 million. Compared to the first “Top 100” in the “Bilanz” in 1988, per capita wealth has almost tripled.

Increase less than in previous years

However, the growth in assets has flattened significantly compared to previous years. While the annual growth between 2012 and 2016 was an average of 36 billion francs, it has shrunk to six billion in the current year.

In 2015, the rich were troubled by the falling gold price and the depreciation of industrial raw materials such as aluminum, copper and crude oil. In addition, the export-oriented Swiss companies suffered from the strong franc. As a result of these developments, 34 empires were rated lower than in 2014.

Ranking since 1988

In 1988 the “Bilanz” published its first ranking list of the richest, which at that time only included the “Top 100”.

  • Commentary from Bruno Hochuli (Bruno Hochuli)
As long as the super rich pay taxes correctly and invest their money wisely for the benefit of all humanity, there is nothing wrong with it. You can't throw all rich people into the pot of parasites. Without your commitment around the world, we would be much poorer. Let us grant them the wealth. There is no place for envy. But they should also think about nature and the environment.

As long as enough crumbs fall from the table of the rich for a majority in our country, we don't care about this, actually inhuman, inequality of distribution. However, it looks like this system always comes to an end naturally. Unfortunately for the majority a painful one.

In evolutionary terms, wanting more was vital to human survival in the past. That's why the human brain still thinks that more is better. But the brain should slowly recognize that the pursuit of more possessions and wealth threatens the earth and humanity. The survival strategy can therefore only mean limitation and solidarity. If the reptilian brain wins, we will one day be like the dinosaurs. With the difference that it's our own fault.
