Which ingredients in the pipe cleaner?

Granulate or liquid cleaner?

There are two types of drain cleaners, both of which use alkaline ingredients to break down clogs. A few cleaners that have come onto the market in the meantime work on an enzymatic basis.

If the blockage is deeper in the pipe, a liquid pipe cleaner should definitely be used, as it gets better to the clogged area.

Water runs off badly - use granules

However, it can also happen that the pipe cleaner simply runs off at a point that is not yet completely closed and cannot develop any effect. Therefore, if the drain is only partially blocked and drains slowly, a granulate is more suitable.

Ingredients in the pipe cleaner

  • Sodium hydroxide / potassium hydroxide
  • Sodium hypochlorite (some cleaners)
  • Aluminum particles
  • Chlorine compounds
  • Oxidants

Pipe cleaner as granules

Sufficient ventilation is important when using granulate cleaners. The aluminum grains are oxidized by the alkali and the formation of hydrogen. The mixture gets very hot and can severely damage plastic drainpipes.

Drain cleaner with enzymes - biological drain cleaner

As an alternative, detergents with enzymes can be used. These break down hair and fats hydrolytically. These cleaners are harmless to wastewater, but they have to act for a long time and be used more frequently.

If you have drainage pipes made of plastic or HT pipes, you should fall back on the already more environmentally friendly solution and free the pipes from the clogging with a spindle or a pipe cleaning shaft.

You can still use the good old suction cup or plunger. You may need to use it several times, adding hot water and washing-up liquid in between, but the results are often the same.
