The new Mercedes-Benz CLS - the pioneer

In 2003 it rolled onto our streets for the first time and combined the elegance and dynamism of a coupé with the functionality of a sedan. We can only speak of one Be a vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz CLS! Now the new model, the third generation, is coming and wants to be considered a pioneer. Everything is new so not May, but Mercedes with the CLS, because the handsome Stuttgart would like to imply a completely new design language. It is characterized by clear forms and reduced lines - sensual clarity at it's best. In addition, there is a downward-opening grill contour, the front rising front and wide, low headlights. Curtain up for the new model!

Design - The Mercedes CLS is not only sensual ...

... but also clearly what one can speak of a design that gives the Stuttgart a timeless charisma. That was already the case with the original model, the first-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS. The four-door coupe was once the founder of a new segment. And although other manufacturers have long since followed suit, the real design icon is still the CLS alone.

While the second generation looked more sedan-like than the original model, the new Mercedes-Benz CLS builds on the beginnings and offers a neat coupé charm. This is supported by the flat side windows, the crouched greenhouse and the elongated proportions. If you look closely at the design, you will notice a reduction in the beads and edges, which reflects the skillful further development of the sensual clarity. There are also striking details on the front, such as the diamond grille with a slat or the grill silhouette itself, which opens downwards and is reminiscent of the Panamericana grille of the Mercedes-AMG GT. But not only the design per se won, but also the aerodynamics: The new Mercedes-Benz CLS has a drag coefficient of just 0.26

Interior - derived from the exterior

Inside the Beaus, of course, passengers can expect pure luxury. This is not reflected in exuberant flourishes, but in its clear basic shape, which was derived from the exterior and is sensual and fluid. Of course, only high-quality materials were used and meticulously processed.

In order to create a generous feeling of space, the Mercedes-Benz CLS was given a cockpit that emphasizes the preparation. The ambient lighting, which creates a club atmosphere in 64 colors, adds an extra dose of charm. It extends into the illuminated air vents that are based on aircraft turbines and that we have already seen in the new A-Class cockpit. Depending on the temperature setting, the light color of the ambient lighting changes to a warm or cold shade.

Of course, no modern automobile today can do without high-resolution displays. Accordingly, the Mercedes-Benz CLS offers a widescreen cockpit with two 12.3-inch screens connected by a common, continuous cover glass. The fully digital cockpit is freely configurable - depending on your personal taste.

The circle to the first generation comes full circle when it comes to the choice of wood: you can choose a high-gloss or an open-pore center console panel - very elegant. In addition to the increased utility - the Mercedes-Benz CLS is designed for the first time as a five-door model and lets its backrests fall in a ratio of 20/40/20 - the four-door coupé primarily aims to increase comfort. The ENERGIZING comfort control is available for this. It networks various comfort systems with one another, such as the air conditioning including the scenting, the seats with their heating, ventilation and massage, as well as the surface and steering wheel heating with the lighting and music atmosphere. Depending on the needs of the passengers, a real wellness setup for the Mercedes-Benz CLS can be created in various programs.

Motors - in a row!

In the new Mercedes-Benz CLS, the Swabians are offering a completely new range of engines that will have three six-cylinder engines ready for market launch. It starts with the CLS 350 d 4MATIC, which already generates very dynamic 286 hp and a hefty 600 Nm. With it it should go to 100 km / h within 5.7 seconds, while the consumption of 5.6 liters more than lives up to the Swabian tradition of saving. Above that is the CLS 400 d 4MATIC, which also drives up with all-wheel drive and the same sparrow thrust. Its output, however, is even more powerful 340 hp and extremely emphatic 700 Nm of maximum torque. This Mercedes-Benz CLS leaves the 100 km / h mark behind in 5.0 seconds.

The new in-line six-cylinder is the Mercedes-Benz CLS 450 4MATIC. The unit is supported by an EQ Boost - i.e. an integrated electric motor - which results in extremely powerful performance data. On paper this means 367 hp from the gasoline engine, which is supplemented by 22 additional hp from the EQ Boost. You can feel this on the road by accelerating to 100 km / h in 4.8 seconds. The consumption of 7.5 liters in the mix shows that the EQ Boost not only promotes sporting potential, but also savings.

Driving - safe, comfortable, assisted

Safety is a top priority with the Mercedes-Benz CLS. This is already evident from the fact that the latest generation of driver assistance systems is partly standard equipment. You don't have to do without an active brake assistant, a lane keeping and attention assistant or the Speedlimit assistant, just as you do with the PRE-SAFE occupant protection system. The driver assistance package is optionally available, which includes an active distance assistant, a braking assistant with an intersection function and an evasive steering assistant. The latter adjusts the speed in front of curves so that you drive like on rails. The system also offers an active blind spot warning, active lane keeping assistant and PRE-SAFE Plus. There is also a new traffic jam assistant for motorways and similar roads that allows stops of up to 30 seconds. Since safety - especially in the darker months of the year - also has to do with visibility, the Mercedes-Benz CLS can be upgraded with an ultra-range high beam for the multibeam LED headlights, which offer a maximum permissible light intensity.

The CLS is basically a comfort-oriented vehicle. Nevertheless, he gives the driver the choice between three chassis. Basically, the four-door coupé is based on a four-link front axle and five-link rear axle and combines a steel suspension with these components in the series trim. As an option, you can choose the Dynamic Body Control, which represents a sporty set-up and relies on continuous adjustable damping. The Sport and Sport + and Comfort driving programs are available. In addition, you can put a cross in the surcharge list for the air suspension, the Air Body Control, which brings particularly finely adjustable and adaptive dampers.

Since you are “always on” these days and work constantly and everywhere, the Mercedes-Benz CLS can even be turned into an in-car office - a mobile office. This is made possible by the Mercedes me service, which takes over the location of calendar entries in the navigation system and makes annoying entries superfluous. You can also automatically dial in to telephone conferences via a corresponding calendar entry - even with the possibly necessary PIN, which is automatically recognized.

For "early adopters" - Edition 1

The Mercedes-Benz CLS will be available as Edition 1 for around a year from the market launch. If you choose this version, a special interior concept with "nappa leather" and copper-colored accents is available. An analog clock in ICW design increases the luxury touch of the Stuttgart. From the outside you can recognize the limited model by the unique diamond grille, as well as the AMG Line and the Multibeam LED headlights. 20-inch AMG rims serve as the gear train. Hollywood predator Ray Donovan would certainly have liked to drive up to his discerning clients.

I've been in love with cars for as long as I can remember. At the age of four I was able to name all cars by brand and type. A disease that inspires me and that can annoy my environment to death ... :) So it finally developed that I came to write about dreams that have turned tinny. From SUVs to small cars, from super sports cars to common sense diesel - I'll keep you up to date with news and driving reports and look forward to your suggestions, wishes and criticism! Life motto: There is no substitute for displacement but more Hurbaum!
