How to Make a Diaper Cake for Baby Showers

The next time you're hosting a baby shower, create a baby shower centerpiece that will make a much appreciated gift for the mother-to-be. Making a so-called “diaper cloth” takes less time than an edible cake, and it stays fresh until the new baby arrives. You can also have as much fun decorating as the edible variety. While cute baby animals are memorable gifts in their own right, putting them on a diaper cake in the nursery will look even cuter.

Follow these simple instructions to make your own diaper cake. Even if you've never turned on an oven in your life, the diaper cake is a breeze.

Diaper Cake Supplies

Here are the supplies you need to get started with your diaper cake centerpiece:

  • About 50 medium-sized disposable diapers. The cake in this tutorial uses 48 diapers, but since diaper brands come in different sizes, it's good to have a few extras on hand. You can always pass the extras on to the expectant mother in a separate package.
  • A large platter to build the cake on (a 16 inch disposable cardboard platter sold in a party store works well)
  • About 70 feet of tape used to tie the rolled diapers (1 foot per diaper) and tie the rows together
  • Ribbon approximately 1 m wide for finishing the floors
  • A large baby bottle
  • Small candies to fill the baby bottle
  • duct tape
  • Various baby items such as pacifiers, teethers, combs, brushes, rattles, bibs and more

Roll the diapers

This is the most time consuming part of this project:

  • Cut 48 feet of the narrow ribbon into one foot lengths.
  • Decide if you want the diaper's printed embellishment to appear on the cake. When you do this, roll each diaper from the crease to the outside, leaving the ornament on the outside. If not, roll the embellishment on the inside.
  • Tie each rolled diaper with a narrow ribbon.

Assemble the levels

Create three layers for this diaper cake; You will need an extra pair of hands so you can hold things together while tying them together.

Start with the top tier:

  • Fill the baby bottle with the candy. Place five or six diapers around the bottle and tie them together with a narrow ribbon in this configuration.
  • Create the second level with about 15 diapers. Tie them again tightly with the narrow ribbon.
  • Create the third and largest level with about 27 diapers. To make the diaper tying process easier, first tie an inner diaper circle together. Then put the last row of diapers around this circle and tie them again.

Decorate the cake

That's the fun part:

  • Place the largest cake layer on the plate. Stick them to the platter with several pieces of tape on the underside of the diapers. Don't use so much tape that the diaper will tear if the mother takes it apart.
  • Place the second tier on the base and tape it to the lower tier.
  • Put the smallest layer on top and attach it like the other layers.
  • Stow the various baby accessories around the cake. Make sure they are snug and use more tape if necessary to keep them from falling.
  • Finish the cake with 1 inch tape wrapped around each layer to secure the accessories and add the finishing touches.
  • Decorate the cake to match the baby shower theme, whether it's teddy bears, unicorns, bubbles or something else. You can make it look like a cake for a little girl with lots of pink accessories and toys. If the parents don't know or have not shared the baby's gender, decorate them with lots of soft pastel colors, the baby's classic colors. Consider the bolder colors that some parents prefer for their baby's nursery.
